About the Role:
This role is responsible for the management of a diverse section of southern Kosciuszko National Park from snow covered alpine environments through to tall alpine ash forests and the headwaters of the Murray River, all within the Snowy River Area. Some of the challenges for this position include management of the remote Pilot Wilderness Area, historic huts, a number of major capital works projects and high-profile pest management programs. The Snowy River Area team is a highly productive and supportive group that work together to achieve the Area’s priorities.

The role entails implementing the functions, policies and legislative requirements of the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). Part of the role involves frequently liaising with members of the public and various stakeholder groups, as well as providing advice about conservation matters. As a Ranger you will need excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to write reports and have a positive personality. Suitable candidates must be good problem-solvers and able to think on their feet including in emergencies (such as bushfires). Skills and knowledge in managing natural and cultural heritage, along with an understanding of internal policies and procedures and law enforcement is required. Also, key to this role will be the ability to develop relationships as the role represents the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to a variety of stakeholders sometimes on contentious issues.

Essential requirements:
  • A degree or equivalent relevant to the field operations of the Agency.
  • The role is physically demanding and the requirements of a specific medical will need to be met (includes a task based physical assessment), with a clearance to undertake the firefighting task-based fitness test which must be met to at least a moderate level.
  • Current Driver’s Licence and ability to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles.
  • Required to obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
  • Willingness to fly in light aircraft and preparedness and ability to be involved in incident management duties including firefighting

To be successful in the role, ideally you will have:
  • Ability and desire to be trained in snow survival, search and rescue and skidoo operations.
  • Experience in and ability to work within a collaborative project management environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to play a leadership role in cross border collaborative projects.

The new Cluster will drive for greater levels of integration and efficiency across key areas such as long term planning, precincts, housing, property, infrastructure priorities, open space, the environment, our natural resources – land, water, mining – energy, and growing our industries. In particular, there will be a redoubling of emphasis on regional NSW.

National Parks and Wildlife Service manages, conserves and cares for land in national parks and reserves. NPWS links customer, conservation and cultural outcomes in a sustainable way by building participation in the management and use of parks.

Total Remuneration Package: Package includes base salary ($63,482 p.a. - $98,043 p.a,), an additional 17% loading for working weekends and public holidays, annual leave loading and employer contributions to superannuation scheme. Progression criteria apply to movement within the salary scale.
