AIR6500 is a revolutionary program that will provide the ADF with a Joint Air Battle Management System (JBAMS) which will form the architecture at the core of the ADF’s future Integrated Air and Missile Defence capability. This will provide greater situational awareness to and protection of deployed ADF forces from increasingly advanced air and missile threats, along with increased levels of interoperability with our Coalition partners.

Due to recent growth and the desire to expand the capabilities of the AIR6500 Capture team, Northrop Grumman Australia is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Software Engineering Lead based in either our Canberra or Brisbane offices.

Building on prior software engineering experience, the AIR 6500 Software Engineering Lead will work closely with international and local partners to develop and grow an Australian Integrated Air and Missile Defence software capability. This role will develop and lead a software engineering team across the full spectrum of software engineering, including establishing a DevSecOps software environment, building and testing software prototypes and products, and integrating locally developed products with world-leading international software product lines.

The ideal candidate will have the appropriate background leading software development teams on large software intensive projects. You will have an eye for continuous improvement and be willing to push for advanced technological ideas and guiding their development into a final product. An aptitude for problem solving and engaging with a wider team will be critical to success for this role.

Key duties & responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead a software development team for AIR6500
  • Establish a DevOps software engineering environment
  • Lead the comparative assessment of suitable software products
  • Lead the development of locally produced software components
  • Lead the local software integration of world leading product lines
  • Lead and author tender deliverables.
  • Engage closely with the Systems Engineering team to meet project outcomes.


Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree qualified Engineer (Software, Systems Engineering, IT, Computer Science or similar)
  • Must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Defence security clearance (NV1)
  • Proven Software Engineering experience on large software intensive projects
  • Experience in DevOps tools and processes
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role


Desired experience

  • Experience in containerisation and virtualisation technologies
  • Experience on high integrity real-time systems
  • Experience contributing to the development of new principles and concepts
