About the Role:

We are looking for a passionate and motivated UX Engineer to help build and accelerate the Mad Paws design system to other teams throughout Mad Paws. The design system team makes up part of the platform team, or the “Speed and Scale” team as we call it, and is currently composed of a lead UX Engineer and a designer. As our 3rd design system team member, you will have direct ownership and play a vital role in systemising the Mad Paws online marketplace to deliver high-quality user experiences. Your work will directly impact Mad Paws users and help take the Mad Paws online marketplace to the next level. You will also improve the speed and efficiency of product teams. Some of the technologies/libraries/apps the design system uses include: Figma, CSS Modules, PostCSS, React, TypeScript, Jest, React Testing Library, Storybook, Style Dictionary.

About you:

You are a UX Engineer through and through. Someone passionate about working in the “front-of-the-front”. You have excellent attention to detail. We value people who believe a job worth doing is worth doing right.

You have a strong sense of design, including collaborating well with designers and have empathy and understanding of design. You have strong empathy for the user, always keeping them in mind as you develop. Articles such as The Great Divide, front-of-the-front-end and back-of-the-front-end web development, and Design engineer resonate with you.

Having the right attitude, caring about the quality of your work, and having exceptional attention to detail ticks most of the boxes for this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and develop responsive (mobile-first), robust, accessible, and well-interfaced components as part of the design system’s React component library. This includes writing usage and API documentation for components in Storybook.
  • Write clear and consistent documentation for both consumers and contributors to the design system. We value documentation a lot, and it is an integral part of the design system.
  • Contribute and develop tooling for the design system. For example, create a UI visual regression test suite. This includes working with the design system tokens and their supporting tool ecosystem.
  • Be an advocate for and champion UX Engineering best practices throughout Mad Paws. This is especially true for component-driven development, CSS development, accessibility, and performance.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to improve the core user experience through the design system. Collaboration with design is crucial and plays a big part in how we work.
  • Support the lead UX Engineer in key technical decisions to improve and scale the design system.
  • Work closely with product teams to ensure the Mad Paws design system supports their current and future need
  • Help to educate and promote the design system throughout Mad Paws. This includes providing assistance and mentorship to consumers of the design system.
  • Conduct code reviews via Pull Requests and participate in design reviews.
  • Help foster the Mad Paws engineering culture by producing high-quality code, sharing knowledge, learning from failures, and generally being humble, kind, and respectful.

Your Experience and Skills

  • A solid grounding in Web Standards. For example, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (JS), Web Accessibility (WCAG), DOM, and Web APIs.
  • A deep understanding of HTML, including how to write semantic HTML.
  • A deep understanding of CSS, including its key concepts such as specificity and inheritance, the basic box model, etc.
  • A solid understanding of JS and its fundamentals. As a UX Engineer, you do not need to know JS inside-out, and the majority of JS you will write is for React UI components. However, you need to feel comfortable in the language and be across modern JS and JS design patterns.

  • Solid experience working with React, including its core concepts and APIs. It will be a massive bonus if you’ve worked on a React component library before.
  • Some experience working on a design system, including familiarity with the concepts behind design systems.
  • A reasonable understanding of Web Accessibility, along with techniques required to conform with WCAG guidelines. We will love it if you are invested in building inclusive and accessible user experiences.
  • Some experience working with TypeScript.
  • Some experience working with Figma.
  • Some familiarity with modern front-end build pipelines and development tools such as Bitbucket Pipelines, Babel, webpack, Rollup, Yarn, npm, etc.
  • An interest or experience with client-side performance. Bonus points if you’re familiar with performance budgets.
  • Some SEO exposure. For example, you have a good understanding of how search engine bots understand a page's content and have some experience with structured data such as Microdata.

What is in it for you:

  • After the UX Engineer lead, you’ll be the first engineer to contribute to the design system, meaning you’ll get to have a strong influence over the design system’s vision and direction. Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow in this role.
  • Be part of a fast-growing marketplace in one of the fastest-growing industries in AU (Pet Ownership)
  • You will not be the smartest in the room- lots to learn from your colleagues who come from varied backgrounds and even excited startups before
  • Competitive salary, fun working environment, massive scope to grow & learn AND of course dogs in the office!!

Fun fact about me, I have only one meal a day from Mon-Fri (a good meal packed with 3000 calories) and fast for 23 hours. I am passionate about what I do at Mad Paws and pride myself on my management skills, technical skills and attitude.'

About the company culture:

  • Bunch of smart people who want to make a difference
