The Townsville Public Health Unit (TPHU) coordinates and supports national, statewide and local public health responses, as well as undertaking health surveillance and disease-control initiatives. The unit focuses on the health and wellbeing of populations, as opposed to individuals, with key objectives being protecting public health and preventing disease and illness.

About your opportunity

To support the co-ordination and delivery of high-quality public health strategies that support an increase in both provision of and uptake of sexual health clinical services and the provision of environments that enable safe sex practices across the Indigenous communities of Townsville and North West Hospital and Health Services. This will be undertaken in line with relevant national, state and departmental policy directions, including:
  • Fifth National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategy.
Salary range of $55.22 to $59.42 p.h. (HP4), 17.5% leave loading, 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation. Other employment benefits may include: professional development, salary sacrificing options, shift and locality allowances, corporate discounts, wellness programs and the EAP.

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Public Health Officer who can demonstrate the following:
  • A tertiary degree qualification in Public Health and appropriate registration if applicable.
  • Utilise high levels of knowledge in exercising independent professional judgement to make decisions and propose actions in relation to priorities for sexual health.
  • Provide public health practice advice to executives, policy and decision makers within the relevant HHS.
  • Apply culturally relevant and ethical approaches when engaging stakeholders on sexual health issues.
  • Extensive travel within the Townsville and North West Hospital and Health Service is required, which may include travel by small aircraft.
