The Reintroduction Ecologist will be responsible for the logistics required to reintroduce and monitor the progress of several species of regionally extinct mammal into threat-managed unfenced areas. The reintroductions require effective collaboration with funding partner organisations, National Parks Traditional Owner Co-management Boards and park ranger staff. The work will involve liaising with interstate and SA based counterparts to source animals to translocate, and direct supervision of interns and volunteers involved in the reintroductions. Field work will involve frequent animal trapping, handling and the use of remote monitoring equipment such as VHF radio-telemetry and motion activated infrared cameras.

The role will also be responsible for curating large volumes of data, periodic data analyses and regular reporting of reintroducted species’ progress, including the effectiveness of threat management. Priority species to reintroduce include: Idnya (Western Quoll/Chuditch Dasyurus geoffroii), Kenngoor (Red-tailed Phascogale Phascogale calura). The position will also be involved in monitoring previously reintroduced populations of Idnya and Virlda (Brushtail Possum Trichosurus vulpecula).

Whilst based in Port Augusta, the Reintroduction Ecologist will be required to work in remote locations for extended periods, mostly in rough and steep terrain, and often in arduous climatic conditions. A high level of walking fitness, ability to drive all terrain vehicles and capacity to remain focussed whilst radio-tracking animals from an aeroplane will be an advantage.

The position will be an integral part of the Bounceback Program and be a member of the dynamic Bounceback and Beyond Project Team. Essential Qualifications: Degree in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources Management or equivalent.

Special Conditions

  • Will be required to participate in fire management or associated duties.
  • A current class “C” driver’s licence and willingness and ability to safely operate a 4wd is essential.
  • Inter and intrastate and remote area travel is required, including travel in light aircraft.
  • A current First Aid Certificate is essential.
  • May be required to undertake intra or interstate travel and work outside of the normal hours of work.
  • Demonstrates ability to work alone and be self-reliant.
  • Must be capable of navigation and walking through difficult terrain using GPS, maps and compass.
  • Role is based in Port Augusta and remote locations with limited or no mobile phone and internet coverage.
  • This role has functions pertaining to working with children and is prescribed under the Child Safety (Prohibited Person) Act 2016 as requiring a Working With Children Check (WWCC).   • This role has been designated as a Position of Trust pursuant to the standards required in the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework.   • An appropriate Bachelor Degree in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources Management or equivalent is essential.
$83,152 - $92,020
