About Aurukun State School

Aurukun State School caters to current enrolments of students from Pre-Prep to Year 10. Our students are active learners who come from a rich cultural and linguistic background. We offer specialist teaching in music and physical education to support the interests and foster development of abilities in these important areas.

Aurukun is a very remote Indigenous community located 11 hours by road from Cairns, on the North West coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Home to around 1300 people, this community is the traditional homeland of the Wik, Wik Waya and Kugu people. The predominant traditional language spoken in Aurukun is Wik Mungkan; this is the first language of most Aurukun children. A region rich in traditional cultural practices.

When you have some down time, get out and explore the local area, go fishing or camping or take the 4WD out for a run - ask the locals for some tips. Travel to Aurukun is by road or air with Skytrans operating flights on weekdays. Local amenities include a health clinic, library, fuel station, store and take away food shop.

Please note Aurukun is an Alcohol Management Plan community.

Your Opportunity

The role of Head of Department (Student Services) will deal with the areas of Student Wellbeing and Classroom Management at Aurukun State School. This position is an important part of our commitment to providing our students with the additional support they need to engage with their education. This role will suit a hard-working, highly motivated and resilient educator. Knowledge of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) would be advantageous as would knowledge of Essential Skills of Classroom Management. Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in Student Wellbeing will be highly regarded.
