JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is seeking an APS6 Regional Vector Coordinator to join their Science & Surveillance team in Adelaide.

Through till June 2023, this 2 year contract role is an opportunity to secure your future with a Federal Government organization that is one of the countries leading employers.

As the Regional Vector Coordinator you will coordinate, supervise, provide direction and training to a team of Vector Surveillance officers. You will maintain regular contact with key stakeholders and act as the central contact for the department, Border Force, Defence, and State/Territory Health staff for issues related to vector responsibilities. 

Amongst other duties, you will:

  • Conduct vector monitoring activities as per risk category requirements, including placement, installation, maintenance and servicing of all traps.
  • Conduct routine diagnostics for vector samples including outports if required.
  • Conduct an annual review of the vector monitoring arrangements
  • Coordinate collection of vector data including the preparation of annual reports 
  • Contribute to non-routine, operational vector monitoring and management activities, such as undertaking inspections of conveyances or high-risk goods and working with other Vector program staff and the National Vector Coordinator to develop innovative approaches to managing vector risk.
  • Actively contribute to, and implement, WHS and quality management practices, including identifying and assessing the risk of hazards

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience with planning, managing and conducting of field-based surveillance for insects, ideally mosquitoes, including establishing, maintaining and checking a network of traps.
  • Experience with working in a laboratory including rearing insects, and preparing insect specimens and using light microscopy for their identification.
  • Sound data management skills including demonstrated competence in using programs such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake diagnostics for insects using light microscopy.
  • Proven ability to perform field and laboratory tasks and management 
  • Strong verbal, written and inter-personal communication skills and the ability to communicate to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Willingness and ability to work out of hours as required, including over weekends and on public holidays as required.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation and ability to commit energy and drive to see that goals are achieved in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated coordination skills and capacity to think strategically.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain productive, positive, respectful relationships within a team, and a diverse array of stakeholders.

To be eligible for this role you:

- MUST be an Australian Citizen
- Have or be able to obtain baseline security clearance
- It is highly desirable to have a degree in entomology or zoology, ideally in medical entomology
- Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
- Have or be able to obtain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
